One of the great world powers which became very active in the Middle East during the 19th century was Russia. Its extensive religious and political activities here led to the acquisition of land - the Russian Compound - in 1860, which they called Novy Yerusalim - the New Jerusalem. In the compound a church, hostel, hospital, and consulate were built.
On the tour we will trace the arrival of Russians to Jerusalem, hear about their pilgrimages, purchasing land, and about the transformation of the compound from the days of the 19th century until modern day. We will visit the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, Sergei’s Courtyard and more.
