Tour of National Memorial Hall - Mt. Herzl

By touring the National Memorial Hall, you become a partner in a journey through the life of the nation, a meaningful, powerful and emotional experience through stories and memories stretching back to the beginning of Zionist settlement in the land of Israel…between memory and remembrance.

About the project: The National Memorial Hall on Mt. Herzl memorializes, for the first time in one place, all the fallen from Israel’s wars. The Hall is designed to allow visitors a quiet, private space to connect to their fallen loved ones, and at the same time is a symbol of collective remembrance. The unique building was constructed as a bell of light that opens to the sky in a swirl and floods the center of the mountain with light. The wall of names whose length is about 250 m, surrounds the impressive building. It is shaped like a torch and made of 23,000 bricks. The name of each of the fallen is presented on a brick with the date of their death. On the yearly anniversary a memorial candle is lit in each of the appropriate bricks.

On the outside, the roof of the building mirrors the topography of the mountain in soft lines of Jerusalem stone, and blends into the vista of the adjacent cemetery. The bell of light that soars over the hall constituted an exceptional engineering challenge. Together with top development engineers of the IDF and the ETH Zurich, a successful, innovative solution was found on how to lessen the force of gravity. Besides the Italian Dedalo Minosse prize, the project also won the British RIBA prize and other prestigious international prizes.

The new exhibition presents the design process of the National Memorial Hall on Mt. Herzl through a series of photographs and film clips showcasing the stages of planning and construction, and also includes 26 other projects that participated in the Italian architecture competition.
